- Phish of the day: Beware tax-season email scamsIf you've noticed an uptick of spam in your junk mail folder lately, you're not alone. Scammers go into overtime around the holidays and into tax season, aiming to trick you into forking over personal information. These email sneak-attacks are called "phishing" and it's nothing new. What is new this year is that a lot of the bogus em […]
- A new and (p)interesting way to shop onlineJust a year ago when I was moving into my first apartment, my cousin sent me an invite to a site she thought could help me shop for my new digs: Pinterest. I will admit: I played around with it, and I just didn't get it; I was overwhelmed by images and I found the interface cluttered. She said I was missing out on something great, and now I'm eati […]
- Unsafe car seats and tires recalled; and mispackaged contraception packs scare consumers againSeveral recalls this week affect the safety of your ride, including two large child car seat recalls, one tire recall and two vehicle recalls. - House plants you can't killEven with the pleasantly warm weather this week in New York City (thanks global warming), it's hard not to long for a little green right about now. With my notoriously black thumb, I typically shy away from growing houseplants and instead anxiously await the sprouting of my neighbors spring bulbs. Not this year. Intrigued by Home Depot's money back […]
- Beauty beware: Hepatitis risk at nail salons and barbershopsI'm a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to nail care, preferring to shape and paint my own talons instead of paying someone else to do it. Apparently, my frugal ways may do more than save me money -- it might also save my health. Nail salon and barbershop patrons may be at risk for hepatitis infection if the tools commonly used -- such as nail files, nail […]
- Are you buying a big-screen TV for the big game?Over the years, the Super Bowl has grown from just being a game for all the marbles at the end of the NFL season to a near-universal day of celebration and parties that even non-fans can enjoy. Sure there's the spectacle of the game itself, but watching all of those "can you top this" commercials has grown into its own national pastime. And no […]
- Hands-on with four good, cheap new carsI get to drive a lot of different cars throughout the year, and they run the gamut from Powerball-winner hardware to basic, affordable transportation. Sure, the glitzy stuff is a lot of fun, but some of the best new cars I've had the opportunity to try are also among the least expensive. This is good news if you want to buy a new car but have a modest […]
- Child seat belt safety: When to transition out of a boosterParents might breathe a sigh of relief when their children no longer need a bulky child car seat or booster, but they shouldn't exhale just yet. Many young children who use adult seat belts are improperly secured because of ill fit, finds a study by the University of Michigan.read more […]
- Counting calories: Of course, there's an app for that...Actually, there are hundreds of apps and websites to help you count calories: the ones you are burning and the ones you are consuming. ConsumerSearch found six women who have enlisted their computers and mobile devices (and have been doing so for at least six m […]
- Inspired vegetarian recipes to chase away the winter bluesIn the dead of winter, with greenmarkets either closed or offering very limited selections of produce, it's all too easy to think that healthy, meat-free meals are out of reach. But you can still find a variety of veggies that are either in season or available year-round. With a mind toward that healthy-eating New Year's resolution, we scoured the […]
- Should Google's new privacy policy worry you?"Don't be evil." Google's unofficial mantra sounds pretty noble, right? But some say that Google has lost its guiding light in the wake of some recent changes to the company's privacy policy and Terms of Use. What's all the hubbub about? Why do some think it's the end of privacy as we know it, and others just shrug their sh […]
- Can you trust online reviews? The issue of fake user reviews is nothing new. We blogged about it back in 2009 after a Wall Street Journal article exposed the practice by certain companies of having employees post favorable write ups to user-review sites, such as Amazon.com. Now, The New York Times has shed some light on something new, yet still the same: offering real customers financial […]
- DOT tries to put the "fair" in airfare pricingEarlier this week I booked a flight from New York to Miami. Even though JetBlue only flies to the nearby Fort Lauderdale, I couldn't pass up the advertisement in an e-mail sent to me: Book Today, $89 each way from JFK. When I went online to look up fares, I did not see that fantastic rate; instead the fares were through the roof with the flights I want […]

- Insulated food carriers and Kia models recalled, plus salmonella in sprouts and saltsKeeping your lunch cold keeps you healthy, unless it's packed in one of two recalled California Innovations insulated food carriers whose gel packs can leak, posing a poisoning hazard. - Where to mount a plasma or LCD TVSo you've picked out the perfect flat-screen LCD TV or plasma TV. You've even picked out the perfect TV wall mount to hang it on a wall. - Stopping junk mail"Neither snow nor rain nor heat or gloom" prevent U.S. mail carriers from delivering roughly 213 billion pieces of mail every year, according to the Today show. - Why this fitness editor cancelled her gym membershipDuring this month when many are taking steps to give their 2012 better-body resolutions a go, I cancelled my gym membership. It isn't a decision that I took lightly; especially since I built a career uncovering the latest fitness trends and my gym card was the key that unlocked an office with a view for years. But like many forging through this economic […]
- Can Siri's chatter talk iPhone 4S owners into using more data?Even if Apple products don't tickle your taste buds, there's a good chance you've heard of Siri, the helpful voice-activated virtual assistant built into the iPhone 4S. As I excitedly tore open the package of my brand new Baby Einstein Baby Neptune Ocean Adventure Gym, I thought eagerly of how it might banish the banalities of my everyday. I could almost feel the plush, multi-colored fish beneath my trembling fingertips. It was as if the six classical melodies were already crooning to me as I relaxed on the prop-up whale pillow, my every care melting away. Anticipatory drool began to dribble down my chin as I imagined the On-the-Go plush teething octopus clenched gently between my canines. The thought of detaching him from the gym structure and taking him absolutely everywhere with me was almost more than I could stand; we would be inseparable. I knew that next week’s arrival of Jacque, the Lamaze Peacock, would complete this blissful outfit. And at only 34.5 x 31 x 19, it was sure to fit in my cubicle at the office.
When the box arrived, I asked my secretary to hold my calls for the day so I could spend some quality time with my new entertainment center. The website assured me that my soft activity gym would “come to life with the crisp and colorful real life scenery of the sea.” I took it out of the box immediately and followed the minimal assembly instructions, anticipating a mind-expanding voyage into the deep. With bated breath, I laid my head upon the whale pillow and waited. Turning my face to the side, I screamed in horror at the sight of my sagging, weary face, caught in the flash of the baby-safe, fish-shaped mirror.
Nobody told me a mirror came with this thing. And I don’t own mirrors for a reason. Last summer, my girlfriend found me locked in my bathroom, staring at the mirror while repeatedly slapping my cheeks and screaming the lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody over and over in the shrillest tone I could muster. They had to break down the door and drag me out, shortly after which Wanda dumped me for our mailman. I haven’t looked in a mirror since. But I digress.
The point is, folks, that I’ve had adventures, and I’ve been to the ocean. And this product, though promising both, offers neither upon arrival. Promotes trilingual learning? More like trilingual horror. I’m sending this goddamn octopus and his cronies back from whence they came.

My son loves this gym. He squeals and chatters away while playing on it. It has been a lifesaver for me due to Jack being such a high need baby (Needs to be held most of the time, and more fussy than not). He has spent over 45 minutes playing on this mat!!! The music is really fun, and the lights are a nice touch. Jack has been using this from about 2 months of age on, and loves to grab and shake the rattle (which is not cloudy on my mat) and will grab and shake the other toys at the same time. It is so much fun to hear him having such a good time : )

I have gotten several different play mats for my 4 month old and none of them entertained him, but this one does. He’ll sit for up to 30min. on his own laughing and making noises on this mat!
Strengths:
-Very colorful and grabs his attention
-Lights and music (can be set to activate by motion, touch, or to play for 15min. which is the longest I’ve found) this is what sold me on the product!
-Tons of attachable and detachable toys that could be used in cribs and playpens
-Great sized mirror
-Whale pillow, which he loves to use for tummy time and supervised
-Easy to store and move around
-Can see him using it for months to come!
Negative:
-One of the toys is really strange (two round/flat discs) that I removed and I don’t see him playing with
This is a must for anyone with a little one!! It gives you a little time in the day to get a few things done and the babies LOVE it!!!

My daughter loves this gym. She spends about a half hour every morning (after chattering my ear off) playing by herself with this toy. Her favorite is the turtle rattle/links guy. She talks up a storm to it and loves to bat at everything – she’s 3 months old.
